Here are the game results and standings for the opening week. I gave you some additional information as well, so that you can hopefully see how I conduct the games. Offensive stats give points like this:
Rk 1 - 2 pts; rk 2 - 1 pt; rk 3 - 1 pt; rk 4 - 1 pt; rk 5 - 1 pt; rk 6 - 0 pts.
Defensive stats have a slightly different point allocation, as the second ranked and third ranked will get an additional point each (2 instead of 1).
Once the nine offensive stats and six defensive stats are summarized and given points as explained, I compare the points for each team like this:
Team A's goals for the first period:
Team A's Off (G, A, P) minus Team B's Def (W, GAA).
Team B's goals for the first period:
Team B's Off (G, A, P) minus Team A's Def (W, GAA).
The second and third periods are calculated the same way, except that other offensive and defensive stats are used:
2nd period - PP, SH, GW vs. +/-, PIM.
3rd period - OT, S, S% vs. Sv%, SO.
In case a team gets a negative number of goals for a period, they're granted 0 goals instead. This way, some surprising results may happen within each week, as a team with 0 offensive points in a period isn't penalized drastically against a team with 4 defensive points. The best teams will still get to the top, and the worst will still fall to the bottom, but the games within each week may be more natural.
Since this is kind of an Original-6 league, I wanted to go fully old-school, so no overtime is played, and a tie is recorded for each team that is tied after the third period. This is also the reason I'm flirting with a 12 week regular season and a 14 week playoff. This will result in a regular season of 60 games and two best-of-seven rounds in the playoffs. To make more of the season relevant for the teams that end up in fifth and sixth place at the end of the regular season, they can play each other in a seven-game series. If so, everyone will get at least 19 weeks of hockey, while the finalists will get 26.
If you have some ideas/suggestions, please tell me, and I'll see what I can do. I hope you like it!
